We, a small group of aspiring permaculturalists, are selling a beautiful piece of land a short drive from Portsmouth Arms train station near Barnstaple in Devon.

This [7.5 acre] meadow is a thriving pocket of biodiversity nestled between plots of permanent pasture on the north boundary, mixed woodland on the southern boundary, and edged by deciduous trees to the east and west. A green track leads from the A377 onto the land which is abundant with wild flowers, ferns, bracken and wild grasses. Remarkable golden spiders, grasshoppers, butterflies, frogs and toads populate this vibrant habitat. Numerous species of song birds can be seen and heard in the air, ground nesting birds among the grasses, as well as barn owls soaring above the meadow, presumably nesting in the surrounding woodland. A snake or two have also made their appearance.

Left to its own natural devices, Taw meadow can be very much enjoyed for its tranquility and wild beauty as an area of conservation. There is a range of elevations, parts of it comprising natural seasonal wetland, creating a diverse range of habitat and microclimates. Some areas recieve sun all day and in the warm months it is a beautiful spot to camp.

For somebody seeking an opportunity for creative landscape design or managed reforestation there is also great potential. Trees have started to move in from the edges and there are examples of Oak and Ash growing well. There is a significant number of young native trees that have been planted this winter, including but not limited to Elder, Alder, Willow and Hazel. These trees have been planted with the particular aim of reforestation and habitat regeneration.

The purchasers of the meadow will be asked to enter into a covenant to ensure the continued peaceful enjoyment of surrounding lands by the neighbours, and also to promote the natural succession of plants and wildlife towards productive restoration.
